Entering Notes
Simple Entry is when you enter notes using the mouse.
1. Choose the NOTE icon
2. Choose a NOTE or REST icon from the palettes and
click on the corresponding measure and placement where you would like it to go.
3.Erase a note by using the ERASER icon
4. Change the note to a different note by holding down the Ctrl key, click on the note and holding down, move the note to the correct staff position.NOTE for stations that have a Triton MIDI keyboard: this tool can be used for note input directly from the MIDI keyboard. To ensure that Finale is connected to the Triton keyboard, in Finale, click on "MIDI" in the menu bar, then choose "MIDI Setup..." In the MIDI Setup window that appears, make sure that the MIDI In Device is set to "In USB MIDI 1x1."
Speedy Entry can also be used to enter notes with the Triton MIDI keyboard and computer keyboard.
1. Choose the speedy entry tool
2. Options for this tool appear under the Speedy menu
3. The way it works is the MIDI keyboard provides the note information and the numbers on the keyboard provide the duration information.
4. Example: Press a C note on the MIDI keyboard, while holding it, press the number 5 at the top of the keyboard (or on the keypad with NumLock selected), then a C quarter note should appear on the staff.
5. You can use this system of entry without a midi keyboard by using the arrow keys to move the note cursor in addition to the number keys.
6. Chapter 16 in the User Manual has the command map for Speedy entry.(Go to Help, then User Manual in the top menu of Finale. This is the only place it appears.)HyperScribe entry can be used with your midi keyboard to enter notes as you play them along with a metronome.
(NOTE: You can only use this feature on computers with MIDI keyboards connected)
1. Select the Options menu then choose Click and Countoff
2. Then choose the settings While Recording
for the Click and Countoff dropdown menus
3. Click the Hyperscribe tool
4. Choose the Hypserscribe menu, then BeatSource, verify that Playback and/or Click has a check
5. Click the measure you want to start recording in
6. Hyperscribe gives you 2 measures to get ready and then everything you play will be recorded into Finale
7. To stop recording, click the mouse
Playback/Audio
On computers with MIDI Keyboards, playback should already be set-up (though instrument patches must be set accordingly).
-The type of audio that sounds depends on the type of instrument you chose for the part(s)
-You can play back the composition by using the Control Panel and clicking the green play button
-Next to the Control Panel is the place to set tempo and playback button that opens the playback settings screen.
NOTE about playback in Finale 2005:
There is a bug relating to the new feature in Finale 2005, the Human Playback Style. To find it, choose the Playback Settings tool.
If you do not hear your score when attempting to playback, look under the Human Playback Style menu. The default option is set for Standard, but changing this to None should enable the playback function.
Overview of tools
The image below displays most of the useful tools for editing in Finale. Follow each number to find out how to use the tool.
1 - The Magnifying Glass tool allows you to zoom in and out of the page. Hold down the Ctrl key to zoom out.
2- The Staff tool allows you to change staff perimeters. Double-click on the little staff box to see the editing possibilites, including transposing parts and notation styles. Further choices can be found under the Staff menu.
3- The Measure Tool allows control over measures. Also look at the measure menu to add bars, delete bars and change the options for measure numbers. The little box that appears above every bar in the score controls the length of each bar. Double-click on this box to see options regarding barlines.
4- The Key Signiture tool allows key changes thoughout the entire score. Just double-click in the bar where you wish there to be a key change.
5- Time Signiture changes can be made mid-bar or at the beginning of a bar or can be applied to a region.
6- Opens the Simple Entry pallete (shown to the left of the diagram) which controls note entry via the computer keyboard of MIDI keyboard. Ties, accidentals, grace notes and simple triplets are also found here.
7- Triplet tool for creating triplets, quaduplets, quintuplets etc for any given rhythm.
8- The Expression tool opens the Expression pallate, which is shown to the right of the above diagram.
9- The Smart Shapes Pallate lets you attach symbols to notes and bars.
10- The Articulation Tool. Click on a note to add an articulation. Notice also the edit option within the Articulation Window.
11- The Text Tool, for text inclusion. NOTE: this is not like the Expression tool, which attaches an expression to a specific note or bar. Texts created with the Text Tool are page specific and do not move if the page is reformated/respaced.
12- The Playback Console, for playing your scores.
Changing sound patches on the Triton Synthesizers
When you want to control the exact type of sound your composition plays back:
1. Go under Window in the top menu
2. Choose Instrument List
3. Choose the row from the Prog. column for the instrument you would like to change the sound.
4. Click Edit Instrument
5. For Patch select Bank Select 0, Program Change
6. Enter the first number of the patch next to Bank Select 0 (if your patch number on the synthesizer was 916, enter 9)
7. In the Program Change space enter the last two numbers + 1 (so we would enter 17 for patch number 916 – 16+1)
Finding Patch Numbers
1. Unfortunately there is not an easy way to find the patch numbers within the synthesizer or Finale. If you do not know your desired patch number Freestyle provides an easy way to look up patch numbers.
2. Open Freestyle(located in the Start>Programs>Departmentally Sponsored>Music folder)3. Go to the Ensemble window and enlarge it to see the Sound column.
Click under the Sound column on one of the rows and you will see a list of Banks and Instrument Groups
4. Choose a Bank # or Instrument Group and find the instrument that you want to use and record the patch number
5. Then follow the instructions above to Changing Sound Patches in FinaleIf you are using the Windows computers without a MIDI keyboard, follow these instructions:
1.In Finale, go to the MIDI menu at the top of the screen:
2.Choose MIDI Set-Up
3.On the MIDI OUT Device (right side) choose SB!Live MIDI Synth
(You must do this each time you open the Finale program)
-After adjusting this setting (if applicable), audio should sound every time you enter a note (without a keyboard you can only use the Simple Entry method for note entry)
USER MANUAL
The most helpful information resource when learning Finale is the User Manual. You can open it through the Help menu at the top of the screen or click on the icon:
