LIBRARY OF CONGRESS SPECIAL MATERIALS CATALOGING DIVISION MUSIC SECTION REFERENCE WORKS IN THE CATALOGERS' REFERENCE COLLECTION edited by Richard H. Hunter from the list compiled by Lois Kuyper-Rushing Washington, D.C. 1991 PREFACE This list is based on the one compiled by Lois Kuyper-Rushing from announcements published in the Music Cataloging Bulletin under the heading "New Reference Work(s) in the Music Section." Dr. Kuyper-Rushing's list was made available as part of the Music Library Association's online filelist through LISTSERV and was downloaded to the Music Section's PC by June Gifford. To complete and update Dr. Kuyper-Rushing's list, it was checked against the Catalogers' Reference shelves and shelflist. Entries for works not listed were added and entries for works not in the CatRef collection were deleted. All works were also searched in the LC data base (including where necessary the PREMARC file); the entries were corrected according to the information found there, and the LCCN was added to each. For the few items not found online, the printed card in the Music Shelflist (if any) was consulted. No attempt was made to update older records to contemporary cataloging style; hence some entries display ISBD punctuation and others do not. Generally (in accordance with TOSCA policy) choice of main entry was not reconsidered; however, corporate headings were deleted where it was obvious that the AACR 2 main entry would be under title. (An example is An Alphabetical index to Hector Berlioz Werke, which in the PREMARC file is entered under the heading "Music Library Association.") All remaining headings, personal and corporate, were changed where necessary to AACR 2 form. The CatRef collection contains many photocopies of thematic indexes and lists of composers' works that were originally issued as parts of larger publications. Wherever possible these have been entered under their own compilers. If such a list has a title of its own an "In" analytic entry has been constructed (see, for example, the entry under Klafsky); in other cases the title of the main work has been retained (see, for example, the entry under Bengtsson). In all such cases the pages reproduced in the CatRef photocopy are indicated. An incomplete call number in parentheses indicates where these photocopies are shelved in the CatRef collection. In a few cases whole volumes are for convenience shelved under class numbers different from those given in the online record; in such cases the "official" LC call number is given first, followed in parentheses by the CatRef shelf number (see, for example, the entry under Hoffmeister). For some works Dr. Kuyper-Rushing noted the existence of editions later than the ones in the CatRef collection at the time her list was compiled. In most cases I have been able to replace these items with the later editions. In the few cases where this has not yet been accomplished, Dr. Kuyper-Rushing's notations have been retained, except where it has been found either unfeasible or unnecessary to replace the editions now in the collection. The main portion of this list is a complete listing (it is hoped) of all published works in the CatRef collection, arranged by main entry. The second part, the Composer List, which begins on p. **, repeats the entries for all works devoted to individual composers, this time arranged by composer. This list will be revised as necessary, as new works are added to and obsolescent ones removed from the CatRef Collection. As always, catalogers' suggestions for the improvement of the collection are welcome. RHH ** In this computer file version of the listing, pages are not relevant. The listing by main entry is stored under the file BY ENTRY. The listing by composer is stored under the file BY COMPOSER. --Ralph Papakhian (MLA-L co-listowner)
