Appendix 4, Glossary B. Do Exercise 1, Title and Statement of Responsibility. You will need to work primarily with sections 1.1 and 6.1 of AACR2. C. Your supervisor will select four sound recordings. Identify the chief source of information for each, following rule 6.0B1. D. On scrap paper, identify the data for each of the eight areas of description. (Note: not all areas are needed in each case. Indicate when an area is not needed.) Discuss with your supervisor. E. Create a bibliographic record for each sound recording; that is, put the data into the format prescribed by AACR2R, with proper punctuation, capitalization, and abbreviations. II. Working from the bibliographic records you have created for the four sound recordings, determine the main entry (name or title). C. Determine what names, titles, name-title combinations, and series titles require added entries. (Note: do not attempt, at this time, to determine the standard form of the heading.) Discuss. D. Using the rules only as your guide, determine the standard form of the headings. III. Subjects A. Read the Introduction to Library of Congress, Subject Headings, with special attention to the section "Establishing and Printing Certain Music Headings". B. Read the following sections of Library of Congress, Subject Cataloging Division, Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings 1. Preface 2. Contents (Skim) 3. Introduction 4. Index (Skim) 5. Devise all the search keys that you can use for: 1. the exercise, Adding Tags, Indicators, and Subfield Delimiters. 2. the four sound recordings B. Read in Online Systems, Searching the Online Union Catalog, 2nd ed. 1. Contents 2. Chapter 2, Searching Procedures 3. Chapter 3, Search Keys 4. Chapter 4, General Rules for Names and Titles VI. Authority Work A. Read in OCLC Authority File: User Manual: 1. Contents (skim) 2. About this manual 3. Chapter 1, Introduction 4. Chapter 2, Search Keys 5. Appendix C, Ambiguous Headings B. Using the exercise, Adding Tags, Indicators, and Subfield Delimiters, and the four sound recordings, determine what headings must be searched for authority control. Discuss. C. Search for headings in the NUC printed volumes. I. Using the four sound recordings, do the following: 1. Assign call numbers 2. Search Authority Files for names and series. If further searching is needed, search other files (e.g. fiche). 3. Search subject headings in the LCSH fiche. 4. Compare each heading in the bibliographic record with the corresponding authority record. If an authorized heading discovered during authority searching differs from the heading in the bibliographic record, consult your supervisor for assistance in modifying the bibliographic record. In making such a change, check also the tags, indicators, and subfield delimiters. 5. Submit the sound recordings for revision. EXERCISE: TITLE AND STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY The following data are from sound cassettes. For each: I. Label the data to indicate: A. Title proper B. Alternate title C. Parallel title D. Statement(s) of responsibility II. Put the data into the order prescribed by AACR2, with appropriate punctuation. III. Include the General Material Designator (GMD). IV. Underline all letters that should be capitalized, following Appendix A (sections A.4A, A.12 etc.). V. If you know them, add any diacritical marks to the foreign language words. VI. Annotate your exercise with the numbers of the rules that guided your decision (each rule should begin either 1.1 or 6.1). VII. After completing your exercise working with AACR2 alone, look up each rule in the LCRIs and MCDs. Do any of them cause you to modify your judgment? ****************************************************** 1. the golden years kitty wells 2. the secret sharer by joseph conrad 3. death in venice by thomas mann 4. joseph brodsky reads his poetry 5. art of public speaking by millard bennett 6. the complete works of william shakespeare 7. the lost child a novel by samuel marriner 8. being in charge seven lectures on management in the workforce written and presented by wilbur honeywell 9. john steinbeck the grapes of wrath (excerpts) 10. eve merriam out loud -- playful sound poems 11. empfindsamkeit und wahrheit sensitivity and truth von gunther hellbricht 12. tantos libros guia bibliografica autant de livres une guide bibliographique so many books a bibliographical guide 13. alice in wonderland through the looking glass lewis carroll 14. enigma variations, op. 36 sir edward elgar 15. variations on an original theme, op. 36 "enigma" elgar 16. fantastic symphony symphonie fantastique hector berlioz 17. parsifal, or, richard wagner and the holy grail 18. alban bergs wozzeck oper in drei akten op 7 19. Answering these questions may help you decide. (NOTE: all of this information is actually contained in the rule, and the process is deductive -- with the exception of knowledge of what constitutes a type of composition, etc., for which an amount of musical background is needed.) Does the title contain the name of a type of composition? YES/NO If yes: remove statements of medium of performance, number, date, and key. Is anything left other than the name of the type of composition? YES/NO If no, then: medium, etc. are part of the title proper. If yes, then: medium, etc. are to be put in other title information. All of these examples are from existing bibliographic records. Punctuation (chiefly commas) has been provided to break up the flow of data, not as suggestions about answers. 1.
