Description: The Special Materials Cataloging Division, in cooperation with the Motion Pictures, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division, is working to remove a collection of two million sound recordings from the Library of Congress' arrearage. This arrearage includes special collections such as the Armed Forces Radio and Television Series, the NBC Radio Collection, the Altshuler Collection, as well as thousands of popular, jazz, classical, and non-music compact discs, long-playing analog discs, and 78's. The library's goal is to have this entire collection under bibliographic control by the end of the year 2000. The Special Materials Cataloging Division is offering unpaid sabbaticals to music librarians to assist with sound recording arrearage reduction and to receive instruction in cataloging sound recordings. Participants will spend three-fifths of their time each week performing intensive arrearage reduction activities. The remaining two-fifths of their time would be in one-on-one original sound recording cataloging instruction with a senior cataloger in the Special Materials Cataloging Division. If there are multiple concurrent participants, classes in specific aspects of Library of Congress music cataloging practices may also be offered. By the end of each sabbatical, participants will be familiar with Library of Congress sound recording cataloging practices. Each participant will also have the satisfaction of assisting with the arrearage reduction efforts which will serve the entire music library community. Up to three sabbaticals will be offered simultaneously. This opportunity will be offered for one year. After the first year it will be reviewed for its effectiveness, and possibly renewed in subsequent years. Qualifications: Participants must have an MLS degree, significant academic music training, and some cataloging experience, preferably in music. The minimum duration for each sabbatical is three months and may continue to a maximum of six months. Under special circumstances, shorter durations will be considered. Description: Applications for the Walter Gerboth Award, offered annually by the Music Library Association, are now being accepted by the Walter Gerboth Award Committee. Applicants should be music librarians who are members of MLA and are in the first five years of their professional career. The award, an amount up to $1,000, supports research and bibliographic projects. The funds may be used for travel, to support gathering of data and other material, and similar activities. The award may not be used to purchase equipment or computer software. Project budgets may request any amount up to the $1,000 maximum. Positions Previously Posted SOCIETY OF THE FRIENDS OF MUSIC, Athens, Greece is looking for a Special Advisor Librarian, Music Library Lilian Voudouri (6-9 mo. term) Description: The Society of the Friends of Music - Music Library Lilian Voudouri with central seat at the Athens Concert Hall has been given the task to develop the first major Music Library, a project of great educational importance in Greece today. The Library is a private institution, which will open to the public towards the end of the year. Its collections will comprise books and manuscripts, as well as the whole array of sound recordings, electronic texts, and multimedia. The Library, which is also linked to the Internet network, is therefore a "Mediatheque". The Library is at present building up at a very fast pace a collection of 30.000 scores and books and 20.000 discs etc. Thematically, the fields of interest of the Library comprise on the one hand a collection of Western music with emphasis on material of musicological interest, and on the other hand an Archive of Greek music of all epochs and types, except the commercialized popular music. We are at present in the process of searching for a music librarian who will fill the newly vacant position of special adviser on questions of the organization of the Library services for a period of six to nine months, which could begin as early as September 1st, 1995. The adviser's responsibilities would include the following areas: cataloguing (the Library has the Ameritech Horizon computerized catalogue system and uses OCLC), use of wide area networks, training of the Library personnel. The Library is looking for a person who has already several years of experience in a music library with research facilities and therefore could participate actively in the planning of the future development of the Athens Music Library. A specific area of development envisaged for the Athens Music Library is the development of branches in other Greek cities which would be linked to the central library by the use of electronic networks. Description: The Curator is directly responsible for the care, organization, description, and use of the Beethoven Center's collection. The Curator's responsibilities include developing and implementing the Center's collection preservation program, collection processing and cataloging on OCLC and Innopac and designing in-house finding aids, and providing research and reference assistance to the Center's patrons. The Curator serves as co-director of the Beethoven Bibliography Database project; works with the project indexing team; hires, trains, and supervises project data entry assistants; manages all technical aspects of the project; and prepared budget and statistical reports. The Curator also works with the Director of the Center on collection development, space management, presentation of exhibits, publication and distribution of The Beethoven Newsletter, fund-raising, presentation of public tours and lectures, planing concerts and other events, preparation of annual and other reports to the Executive Committee, and other duties as assigned. The Curator supervises other Center staff, which currently includes two student assistants and four volunteers. The Curator represents the Center at local, national, and international music library conferences and maintains contact with the music library and music antiquarian communities. The Curator is under the general direction of the Director of the Beethoven Center, and the Center itself reports both to the Dean of the College of Humanities and the Arts and to the Director of Libraries. The Curator is a tenure-track appointment to a faculty position which requires a progressive record of professional contribution and scholarship for retention, tenure, and promotion. General information: The Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies was established in 1983 as a program of the College of Humanities and the Arts when Phoenix businessman Ira F. Brilliant donated his collection of Beethoven first editions to San Jose State University. The collection now includes original Beethoven manuscripts; nearly 1,800 first and early editions of Beethoven's music; and over 3,500 books, articles, sound recordings, video tapes, and other Beethoven materials. It is the largest Beethoven library outside of Europe. The Center's mission is to serve as the principal resource for Beethoven studies in the United States. Qualifications: Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school; a second graduate degree in music highly desirable, preferably in historical musicology; a working knowledge of German; a bibliographic knowledge of other languages is also desirable; course work in or other demonstrated knowledge of the basic principles of library preservation; demonstrated oral and written communication skills, effectiveness as a lecturer, and an ability to work with the public.
