MUSIC LIBRARY ASSOCIATION -- PLACEMENT SERVICE JOB LIST 1995-96, No. 1: September 1995 No new position listings this month. Positions Previously Posted THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS, SPECIAL MATERIALS CATALOGING DIVISION is looking for music librarians for a sabbatical opportunity. Description: The Special Materials Cataloging Division, in cooperation with the Motion Pictures, Broadcasting, and Recorded Sound Division, is working to remove a collection of two million sound recordings from the Library of Congress' arrearage. This arrearage includes special collections such as the Armed Forces Radio and Television Series, the NBC Radio Collection, the Altshuler Collection, as well as thousands of popular, jazz, classical, and non-music compact discs, long-playing analog discs, and 78's. The library's goal is to have this entire collection under bibliographic control by the end of the year 2000. The Special Materials Cataloging Division is offering unpaid sabbaticals to music librarians to assist with sound recording arrearage reduction and to receive instruction in cataloging sound recordings. Participants will spend three-fifths of their time each week performing intensive arrearage reduction activities. The remaining two-fifths of their time would be in one-on-one original sound recording cataloging instruction with a senior cataloger in the Special Materials Cataloging Division. If there are multiple concurrent participants, classes in specific aspects of Library of Congress music cataloging practices may also be offered. By the end of each sabbatical, participants will be familiar with Library of Congress sound recording cataloging practices. Each participant will also have the satisfaction of assisting with the arrearage reduction efforts which will serve the entire music library community. After the first year it will be reviewed for its effectiveness, and possibly renewed in subsequent years. Qualifications: Participants must have an MLS degree, significant academic music training, and some cataloging experience, preferably in music. The minimum duration for each sabbatical is three months and may continue to a maximum of six months. Under special circumstances, shorter durations will be considered.
