BACKGROUND: The Music Library is a branch of the Stanford University Libraries and contains the primary research collection used by the Department of Music. The collection includes over 80,000 books and scores, 31,000 sound recordings, and over 9,000 microforms with emphasis on historical musicology, theory and composition, computer applications and performance practice of early music. The affiliated Archive of Recorded Sound, with its 200,000 recordings, is one of five major sound archives in the United States. The Music Technical Services Unit, which is located in the Music Library and consists of 2 FTE librarians, 2.5 FTE support staff and hourly assistants, processes music materials for all locations within the Stanford University Libraries. The unit provides original and copy cataloging for music materials in all formats except serials and performs any necessary maintenance for bibliographic records on music. The unit also places orders for and receives music materials in all formats except books and serials. The Head of Music Technical Services reports to the Head of the Music Library. The librarians in the Music Library meet monthly to discuss and direct the activities of the Music Library. The Stanford University Libraries have an on-line catalog, Socrates, and have closed their card catalogs. The NOTIS system is used for cataloging and acquisitions. Qualifications: An MLS degree from an ALA-accredited graduate library school or the equivalent in training and experience is required.
