Description: Position summary: The Research Assistant serves as the principal subject indexer for the Beethoven Bibliography Project. Perform assigned duties and maintain quotas established by the project while adhering to the project's standards of quality. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS. Responsibilities: 1. Analyze significant subject content of books and other literature on Ludwig van Beethoven in English, German, and other languages. Use indexes, tables of contents, abstracts, and the texts themselves to determine major and minor subject headings. 2. Consult Library of Congress subject headings and other on-line and printed lists to determine authorized forms of headings. Formulate new terms to be added to the Beethoven Bibliography Project Thesaurus. 3. Translate portions of texts from German into English; write summaries or abstracts of other foreign language material. 4. Other duties may include: on-line data input; preparation of data for statistical reports; basic research using music reference sources. Qualifications: Knowledge, skills, and abilities: 1. Knowledge of music theory and literature with emphasis on the Classical or Romantic periods. Knowledge of research in Beethoven studies. 2. Advanced reading knowledge of German (testing required). 3. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others and to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines. Education and experience: 1. Bachelor's degree in music required. Advanced degree (M.A. or PhD) in musicology highly desirable. Master's degree in library science and indexing experience can be substituted for advanced degree in musicology. 2. Experience as Beethoven researcher, music research assistant, or translator highly desirable. 3. Knowledge of languages other than German highly desirable. Description: RESPONSIBILITIES: The Curator of SCPA administers the work of the unit. Supervises the organization and archival processing of SCPA's acquisitions and the processing of archival collections throughout the Music Library. Provides library services to the campus community and to users worldwide. A new library facility in the Maryland Center for the Performing Arts will open in 1999. Special Collections in Performing Arts (SCPA) is one of three components of the Music Library, along with the International Piano Archives at Maryland (IPAM) and the Reference and Circulation Unit. SCPA is rich in materials for the study of music in American culture and the arts in education; currently its collections include the archives of sixteen national and international music organizations, related special collections in all formats, and the papers of a number of individuals--to which will be added archival collections in theater and dance. Qualifications: REQUIRED: ALA-accredited master's degree in library science. Music studies resulting in demonstrated musical knowledge and experience. Three years of progressively responsible archival experience with demonstrated abilities in acquiring, processing, and assisting users of archival materials. Understanding of and experience with the application of information technology in archives including scholarly communications and user services. Proven ability to communicate and work cooperatively in an innovative atmosphere with donors, scholars, administrators, colleagues, and employees. PREFERRED: A graduate degree in a performing arts discipline. Demonstrated scholarship in an area of the American performing arts and/or arts education.
