MUSIC LIBRARY ASSOCIATION -- PLACEMENT SERVICE JOB LIST 1995-96, No.10: June 1996 UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE, Irvine, California is looking for a Head, Multimedia Cataloging Section. Description: Working under the general direction of the Department Head, the Head of the Multimedia Cataloging Section is responsible for the cataloging of non-book formats, including but not restricted to sound recordings, laser discs, videocassettes, 16 mm film, microforms, and electronic resources (CD-ROM, computer files, Internet) -- monographic and serial. The incumbent will supervise one Library Assistant IV and will coordinate work with other library units which provide access to audiovisual media and electronic resources. The Department Head and the Section Heads constitute the management team for the Department and have responsibility for setting and implementing department goals and priorities in support of Technical Services and library-wide goals and initiatives. Qualifications: Required: A graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent experience. Minimum of three years of current cataloging experience in processing a wide variety of non-print formats, including original cataloging. Reading and aural comprehension in at least one Western European language, preferably German. Demonstrated leadership or supervisory skills. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse academic community in a team-based library organization. Demonstrated extensive knowledge of and work experience using AACR2, LCRIs, MARC formats, and LC classification and subject headings. Awareness of and commitment to national and international cataloging standards. Substantial experience with at least one bibliographic utility, preferably OCLC. Preferred: Experience cataloging computer file serials. Familiarity with NLM classification and subject headings. Work experience with an integrated library system; INNOPAC is desired. THE CATALOG DEPARTMENT: The Catalog Department is responsible for cataloging approximately 30,000 items annually including monographs, serials, AV, music, computer files, electronic resources, and government publications for all subjects and languages. Including the Department Head, the staff includes 6 librarians, 19 full-time library assistants and a varying number of student assistants. The Department currently consists of five sections: Monograph Cataloging, Catalog Maintenance/Authorities, East Asian, Multimedia, and Serials. The Department uses OCLC for cataloging and the Innovative Interfaces Inc. system as the library's OPAC. Current projects include cataloging of government publications, internet resources, investigation of "fast cat", and the development of the cataloger's workstation. THE LIBRARY: The UCI Libraries consist of the Main Library, the Science Library, and the Medical Center Library. The Main Library, which will undergo a major renovation in 1996, primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Fine Arts, Social Sciences, and Social Ecology, the Graduate School of Management, the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The Science Library, which opened in 1994, consolidating several branches, primarily serves the College of Medicine and the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and the Department of Information and Computer Science. The Medical Center Library serves the Medical Center located 12 miles from the main campus. The UCI Libraries recently implemented a new organizational structure which more effectively aligns the libraries' activities with current and future needs and which includes the use of teams in conjunction with departments. The library collection, supported by a budget of approximately $4.0 million, consists of 1.6 million volumes and 17,000 current serial titles as well as a substantial microform collection. The Technical Services departments, including the Catalog Department, are located in the Science Library. The library has implemented the INNOPAC integrated library system.
