Description: Duties and responsibilities: Searching for and identifying matching bibliographic records in local (NOTIS) and international (OCLC) databases; Cataloging and classifying printed music, sound recordings, video recordings, and computer files in all subjects housed in the Hamon Arts Library. (This process includes descriptive cataloging and subject analysis resulting in assignment of appropriate subject headings and classification numbers); Entering bibliographic data into local and international databases; Updating existing bibliographic records to adhere to national and local cataloging standards; Creating and updating related database files and records including authority files, holdings files, and item records for individual pieces; Supervising processing of music materials cataloged; Tabulating statistics for work completed, writing summary reports of professional meetings attended, and preparing other written documentation as required; Contributing to development of departmental policies and procedures; Participating in professional activities and organizations; Performing related work as required. The Processing Services Division of the Central University Libraries (located in Fondren Library) serves all units of the Libraries: Fondren, Science/Engineering, Hamon Fine Arts, DeGolyer Special Collections, Norwick Center for Media and Instructional Technology and the Institute for the Study of Earth and Man, and operates under the supervision of the Director for Processing Services. There are three departments: Acquisitions, Catalog and Serials, each with a professional head. In addition, the Librarian for Collection Development maintains close working relationships with these department heads and a partial reporting liaison with the Director. The Catalog Department is responsible for receipt and distribution of incoming materials passed from the Acquisitions Department or received as gifts; the cataloging and classification of monographs; selective recataloging and reclassification; preparation of materials for catalog representation and circulation; and maintenance in Fondren Library of an on-line public catalog. Staff of the Department includes 4.5 librarians, 6.5 support staff, and several student assistants. The Music Cataloger works under the supervision of the Head of the Catalog Department. Qualifications: Required: MLS degree from an ALA accredited library school with courses in cataloging; Bachelors degree in music or strong music background; Knowledge of AACR2, LCSH, Library of Congress classification schedules; and OCLC or other bibliographic utility cataloging procedures. Desired: Relevant professional experience in an academic or research library. Experience on NOTIS. Salary & Benefits: Salary Range: $22,179-$26,564.
