Description: Share responsibility for summer reference service, research, and scheduled library instruction with the Conservatory Public Services Librarian and one student Reference Assistant. This position is funded by the Summer Programs Office of the Conservatory of Music specifically to provide reference and research assistance in the Conservatory of Music Library for participants in Oberlin's summer music programs. In 1997 these will include: the Baroque Performance Institute, the Oberlin Flute Institute, the Institute of Vocal Performance Pedagogy, the Oberlin Piano Festival and Competition, the Vocal Academy for High School Students, and Workshops in Electronic and Computer Music. Participants in summer programs range from musically talented high school students, to practicing professional performers and teachers, totaling some 400 musicians each summer. Reference and research service in such a broad scope of music activities and scholarly interests is a challenging opportunity for the developing music librarian. Oberlin's music library collections, well known for their size (127,000 volumes of books and scores and 47,000 volumes of recordings) and quality, are housed in an air-conditioned facility, within the Conservatory complex on the Oberlin College campus. The music library staff includes four professional music librarians, seven support staff, and 6-8 summer student assistants. Other libraries on the Oberlin campus offer equally excellent support for academic pursuits and a full range of library facilities and services. Qualifications: One year of graduate work in Library Science (preferably near end of degree program), academic background in music history and music bibliography, familiarity with music library materials and systems of access, some experience in music performance.
