CONTENTS:
Current employment: activities
MLA national membership and activities
MLA chapter membership and activities
MLA-L, email, professional associations
380 questionnaires were mailed out: 300 to MLA national members, randomly selected from membership list; 80 to nonmembers, selected from among those who attended the two most recent national conferences but were not national members and chapter members who were not national members. Of these 300 questionnaires mailed out, 246 replies were received (65% response rate); 245 were useable. 213 member replies received (71% response rate); 213 useable; 32 nonmember replies received (39% response rate); 31 useable.
This document lists the questions (or topics from each question) followed by a summary of the data for each question or topic. We have attempted to summarize the data in the way which makes most sense for each particular question. This is, essentially, the raw data. Please refer to the narrative section of the report for the interpretation of the data, significant findings, and the results of statistical tests.

Since some of the above categories include multiple responses it does not make sense to investigate how many respondents checked two or more categories.
9. Please select those categories below which best describe your current employment (or your primary job if you have more than one): If you are employed in a library, please check all that apply from letters A through G. If you are not employed in a library, please check all that apply from letters H through Q.
Members overall: 209 responses. 175 respondents checked one category, and 34 checked more than one category. Of those, 20 checked 2, 12 checked 3, 1 checked 4 and 1 checked 6 categories. Some duplicate responses were expected. For example, 6 of those selecting "archive or special collection" also selected "academic or conservatory library". On the other hand, 10 of the 26 respondents checking "retired" also selected at least one other category, undoubtedly indicating part-time work or the type of library they once worked in. These discrepancies do not seem to affect overall analyses or conclusions. In looking at salary data, for example, many of those selecting multiple categories (such as the retired and one other above) did not list salary information or indicated part-time status.

|
58 |
a physically separate branch music library |
|
11 |
other (please specify): many responses pointed out that, e.g., cataloging would be in the main library while the music materials were housed in a branch. |
Which of the following best describes the library containing the music collection:
|
22 |
a fine/performing arts library (several subjects including music) |
|
79 |
a music library (music with perhaps 1-2 other subjects, but the collection emphasis is music) |
|
3 |
a media or sound recording collection |
|
24 |
other many of these responses noted that the music collection, in whole or in part, belonged to a general library collection, although there might be separate service points for music materials. |
Individuals were asked the above questions only if they checked one or more of items A-G in question 9. Because there were some duplicate responses in question 9, it is difficult to determine just how many responses there should have been for questions 10-12, though the number should be less than 181, the total number of responses to any of A-G in question 9. The Working Group agonized over the wording in these questions, and they caused more difficulty in the WG and in those who previewed the questionnaire than practically any other area. Hence the responses to these questions should be considered more for the impression they give than as the basis for any statistical analysis. Suffice it to say that most academic or public libraries MLA members work in contain a separate music library, and most MLA members working in an academic or public library work in a separate branch library or separate music collection. Most MLA members working in an academic or public library work exclusively with music, and the work of only a small but noticeable percentage is primarily unrelated to music.
12. How many total FTE staff (including librarians and paraprofessionals but excluding student, internship, or volunteer positions) work in your library or system?
How many FTE librarians work in your library or system? _____
How many total FTE staff (using the above definition) work in your department, unit, or branch? _____
How many FTE librarians work in your department, unit, or branch? _____
Rather than total responses over all libraries and librarians, it makes more sense to look at responses by type of library. Please note the following categories are not mutually exclusive. These tables are limited to academic and public libraries since they account for the overwhelming majority of responses to question 9A-G.

The above two charts list percentages of total MLA members. However, only 164 respondents selected percentages greater than 0 for any category, so the remaining 51 can be considered non-respondents. Current employment: FTE, salary, benefits, status
16. What percentage FTE is your current position? (use your institution's definition of FTE):
How many hours per week are officially assigned to your position?
How many hours per week on the average do you actually work? (include paid or unpaid overtime) :
What is your salary? Please list whichever is most convenient: Annual salary: Monthly salary: Hourly salary:
For members:
167 of 213 members responded to this question. Of that group, 148 indicated they had full-time employment (defined as FTE of 1.0 OR more than 37 hours per week assigned to the position OR a workweek of more than 37 hours. ) While it is impossible to say, then, how many MLA members have full-time positions, of those responding to this question, 89% have full-time positions. For this group, 133 gave salary figures. Of that group, the salary range was from $7,200 (!) to $97,000 (!); the average salary was $41,490, the median salary was $39,000, and the standard deviation was $12,661.

For nonmembers:
18 of the 31 respondents indicated a full-time position (1.0 FTE, or 37.5 hours per week or more). For that group, the mean salary was $33,655; the median salary was $32,600; the standard deviation was $12,607, and the range was $16,245 to $60,000.

17. What benefits does your current position provide (even if you choose not to use them):
In this analysis, taking those MLA members indicating at least .75FTE positions (n=151), all but one indicated some benefits. The following table lists the number and percentage of this group having these benefits:

No response: 7 (country); 13 (state). A few respondents listed multiple states. Note: these responses probably are not accurate for MLA as a whole because of the effects of sampling for such small numbers. Regional groupings, however, are more likely to be accurate. many of those who replied to "other" emphasized the professional relationships developed through membership.
32. If you currently are not a national MLA member, have you ever been a member?
No one responded positively to this question. None of the non-members surveyed ever had belonged to the MLA. Originally we had hoped to obtain a sample of recently inactive or lapsed members, but this proved impossible.

The column "no response" is the difference between the total responses to any question and the possible number of responses (158, since 158 members went to one or more conferences according to the responses from the above question).
Clearly, keeping current with developments in the field and contact with other members of the profession were far more important than any other factors. Those respondents listing "other" referred primarily to working on or conducting MLA business (committees, roundtables) and alignment with other nearby conferences or meetings.

The reasons for non-attendance are much more varied than attendance, but finances are highest on the list, with work, family obligations, and "not relevant.." distantly following. Those selecting "other" listed various reasons, but health, distance, and special status (on leave from job or student status) were the most common responses.
37. Do you normally receive financial support or release time from your employer in order to attend national MLA meetings?
financial support: (yes: 127/213; 60%)
release time: (yes: 132/213; 62%)
Note: it was not possible to determine precisely how many did not respond to this question since only the "yes" responses were tallied. However, 13 individuals not selecting "yes" for financial support indicated they received some institutional support (in question 38). Hence the total for "financial support" should be at least 140/213, or 66%. It is likely the number for release time also is at least a few percent low.
38. If you can, please indicate an average percentage of your expenses which are covered by your institution or an average dollar amount provided by your institution for your attendance at national meetings:
about ______% OR about $__________
For those replying with a percentage (n=101), the range was 15% to 100%, with an average of 69% and a median of 75%.
For those replying with a dollar figure (n=47), the range was $60 to $1,000, with an average of $444 and a median of $400.

note: 75 people did not check "yes" for chapter membership in q40, and it is that sample these responses are from. Although 75 people could have answered this question, only 40-50 did, which means that some of those 75 who did not claim chapter membership really are members and just failed to answer question 40.
answers in the "other" category tended to be the "it's too much trouble" variety: cost, distance to meetings, conflict with other obligations, never got around to it, …
interestingly, no particular factor was significant (answer of 3 or 4) to most respondents to not join a chapter. Nearly one-half indicated "not relevant to professional goals/interests"; slightly more than a third indicated "change in employment" or " duplicates activities of national organization".

not surprisingly, the subset of chapter members attends chapter meetings more than MLA members taken as a whole. Interestingly, even among chapter members, only slightly more than half attend "often" or "almost all/all of the time".

the few "other" responses were varied. Several were related to presenting a paper or talk; others cited convenience of the local meeting.
As with MLA national, "contact with other members…" was by far the most important factor in chapter meeting attendance, followed by "specific session, program,…" and "keeping current".

"other" responses focused mainly on inconvenience (too far, schedule conflicts, …)
again, no one factor seems to jump out; not being a chapter member is the most obvious, but half also cited (with an answer of 3 or 4) personal/family obligations; nearly half also replied (3 or 4) "programs not of interest."

"other" responses included job ads, continuing education.
note: potential responses = 133 from the above question.
clearly "keep up with news/issues in the profession" (96% responded "3" or "4") and "contact with other members of the profession (84% responded "3" or "4") were by far the most significant reasons for subscribing to MLA-L. Over half replied 3 or 4 for "get quick answers…" or "help others…"

potential responses = 11 (answered yes to question 48)
clearly, "keep up with news or issues in the profession" is the most important function of MLA-L for both members and nonmembers; responses diverge from there.

"other" responses focused on lack of time, too much email
interestingly, though 80 people did not check "yes" to question 48, only about 30 seemed to have responses to question 50. This suggests that many people simply skipped one or both of these questions.
